KATHMANDU, AUG 29 - Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai left for Tehran on Wednesday to attend the 16th Summit of Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) upon the invitation of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. PM Bhattarai left for Tehran boarding Qatar Airways this morning. Prior his departure, PM Bhattarai said he gave continuity to participate at the summit as Nepal is the founder member of the struggle of non aligned movement. He said his Tehran visit will be fruitful. Nepal is the founding member of NAM and has been participating in several summits at the highest level since the first NAM summit in Belgrade in 1961. The 16th summit of heads of the state or government of the NAM is going to be held in Tehran from August 30-31.
Leading 18-member delegation, Prime Minister Bhattarai will address the plenary session of the summit and call on various world leaders, including Indian and Bhutanese premiers, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. For the first time PM’s daughter, Manushi Yami Bhattarai, is accompanying him in a foreign trip after he assumed office exactly one year ago. The theme of the 16th NAM summit is “Lasting Peace through Joint Global Governance”. The summit will be attended by leaders of the NAM member countries as well as observers. The summit is expected to discuss a wide range of international, regional, bilateral, as well as thematic and crosscutting issues of global concerns, said a foreign ministry statement.
